Misc. Notes
Martha Tennison Bealle Dent died from yellow fever on board a steamboat after leaving Mobile bound for Tuscaloosa. Per History of Demopolis 1850-1875, "The boat docked at the lower landing at Demopolis so her body could be prepared for burial before she was buried in Demopolis or delivered to her kin in Tuscaloosa" Her body was taken to the William H. Lyon house on the bluff, then moved up Franklin Street. When several people who had been exposed to the pestilence-ridden boat from Mobile and the body of Mrs. Dent contracted the deadly fever that would kill them, Dr. Vaughn became convinced that yellow fever had indeed reached Demopolis. During the next two months approximately 80 people would die in Demopolis of this disease.
Her place of death on several family records indicate she died in Choctaw Co., which the Tombigbee River forms its eastern boundary. This is about 25 to 35 miles south of Demopolis.
She was buried in the Bealle Cemetery in Tuscaloosa, Alabama near her brother John Sheppard Bealle.
