Griffith was born in Dublin and married Angharad, daughter of Owen. He returned to Wales in 1081, founded the first of five Royal Tribes, and was restored to the Crown of Gwynedd in 1081. Griffith was imprisoned by the Normans in Chester, England, from 1081 to 1093. He is buried in Bangor Cathedral.
